Educating prisoners about their rights

The Commission, the Office of the Ombudsman – Malawi , and Malawi Legal Aid Bureau are conducting a joint human rights awareness campaign in prisons from March 31 to April 4, 2025, funded by the European Union in Malawi Awareness Pool Fund.
The campaign aims to educate prisoners about their rights, explain the roles of the participating institutions, and provide a platform for prisoners to raise concerns and file complaints.⚖️
Initial findings at Thyolo Prison revealed issues such as:
????Delays in court appearances for remanded prisoners.
????Limited access to education within the prison.
????Difficulties for families visiting prisoners due to transfers to prisons far from their home districts.
The campaign will continue with visits to Mikuyu 2, Nkhotakota, and Kasungu Prisons to ensure broader coverage.
