Statement on International Women’s Day

The Malawi Human Rights Commission (the Commission) joins the nation and the global community in commemorating International Women’s Day (IWD), under the theme “Give to Gain”. The Theme underscores a call to action, emphasising that when individuals, institutions, and society, give generously of resources, opportunities and support, the rights and dignity of women are advanced, and the whole nation benefits.

At the heart of this Year’s theme is a simple truth, that, investing in women’s rights and equality yields gains for families, communities, and national development. In Malawi, where women constitute a significant proportion of our population and labour force, closing gender gaps is not only a rights issue but a prerequisite for development.

Despite the progress which has been made, gender disparities remain entrenched in key areas of public life. Women’s labour force participation, for example, stands at 63.2% compared to 71.1% for men, reflecting inequalities in economic opportunity. Sex discrimination continues to restrict women’s full enjoyment of rights and opportunities, particularly in rural communities.

As an independent National Human Rights Institution (NHRI), established under section 129 of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi, the Commission has a constitutional mandate to protect and promote human rights. Central to this mandate is the enforcement of the Gender Equality Act (GEA) 2013, a legal framework that aims to eliminate gender discrimination and promote equal opportunities for women and men in all spheres of society. The Act prohibits discrimination based on sex, harmful practices and sexual harassment. It also provides for gender quotas in public service employment and affirms sexual and reproductive health rights.

“Give to Gain” is a reminder that achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment requires tangible and pragmatic actions, as well as concerted efforts by all stakeholders. Employers must provide equitable employment opportunities. Families must provide support for girls’ education. Governments and duty-bearers must ensure that there is sustained and meaningful political will and allocate resources to eliminate discriminatory practices. Communities must provide safe, inclusive spaces for women to thrive. And, collectively, we must give agency to women whose experiences too often go unheard and unnoticed.

On this International Women’s Day, the Commission reaffirms its commitment to:

  1. Protecting and promoting women’s rights as fundamental human rights, free from discrimination, violence, and exclusion.
  2. Monitoring the enforcement of legal and policy frameworks that guarantee gender equality and access to justice.
  3. Engaging with partners and stakeholders to enhance women’s economic, social, and political inclusion.
  4. Amplifying women’s voices and leadership across the community, national, and institutional levels.

We call upon every Malawian to embrace the spirit of “Give to Gain.” Let us invest more in women’s wellbeing, rights, and equality, for in doing so, we invest in our nation’s prosperity.
